Intent
At Downholland Haskayne CE Primary School, our Languages curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong interest in language learning, with Spanish as the focus for Key Stage 2. We aim to provide all pupils with the opportunity to develop confidence in communicating in another language while fostering curiosity about the wider world. Through learning Spanish, pupils develop cultural awareness, respect, and understanding of diverse traditions and communities. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced to ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed in language learning, preparing them for future study and life in an increasingly interconnected world.
Implementation
Our Languages curriculum follows the structured Language Angels Scheme, adapted to meet the needs of our school through a carefully planned rolling programme. Pupils in Years 3 to 6 take part in regular Spanish lessons that progressively build knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Learning is sequenced to revisit and strengthen prior knowledge, enabling pupils to retain vocabulary, grammatical structures, and pronunciation over time. Lessons are engaging and interactive, using songs, games, stories, and practical communication activities to build confidence and participation. Teachers use formative assessment to identify understanding, address misconceptions, and adapt learning to meet pupils’ needs. Retrieval opportunities and repetition support long-term learning, while cultural understanding is woven throughout the curriculum to deepen pupils’ appreciation of Spanish-speaking countries and traditions.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Downholland Haskayne CE Primary School will have developed a secure foundation in Spanish, enabling them to understand and respond to spoken and written language and communicate using simple sentences with increasing fluency. Pupils will demonstrate growing confidence, enthusiasm, and curiosity towards language learning. They will leave primary school with the knowledge, vocabulary, and cultural understanding needed to continue language study at secondary level. Progress is evident through pupils’ ability to recall prior learning, apply language skills in new contexts, and speak positively about their learning journey.
